What is Skate the Lake?
Skate the Lake is a volunteer run, non-profit pond hockey tournament. The tournament takes place on Lake Minnedosa which the Town of Minnedosa prepares with several rinks to allow for multiple games to be played at once. The non-contact, 4-on-4 format features customized nets instead of goalies and special rules to ensure safety and fair play. Lake Minnedosa provides the natural setting needed to hold a successful event. There is no question that our Lake exceeds any other venue out there for an event of this nature.
Started in 2007
In 2007, our 1st Skate the Lake pond hockey tournament donated $2700 to the Minnedosa Community Childcare Cooperative.  The incredibly cold temperatures did not stop our teams, volunteers and organizers from having a great time while supporting the efforts of the Minnedosa Community Childcare Cooperative in opening a public daycare facility in Minnedosa. Once again this year’s recipient will be The Minnedosa Childcare Community Cooperative.
The Second Annual Skate the Lake Tournament - 2008
In 2008, Skate the Lake attracted extreme winter conditions for our original weekend (Feb 9 + 10), causing the event to be postponed until the following weekend (Feb 16 + 17). We were able to donate $2000 to the Minnedosa Community Childcare Cooperative daycare project. There were so many positive comments about having Skate the Lake during the February long weekend that we have decided stick to that weekend in 2009.
Third Annual - 2009
The Minnedosa Commercial Hockey League is pleased to present the 3rd annual “Skate the Lake” – Minnedosa Pond Hockey Challenge on February 14 + 15, 2009. This year the tournament has several new features: challenge games on Feb. 14 at 4:00 pm, a women's division, a BBQ pork dinner & social evening on the Saturday night and a Shooting Contest to try to win $25,000. Skate the Lake is joining forces with the Minnedosa & District Recreation Commission to present Winterfest on the second day of the pond hockey tournament - Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009. The Skate the Lake Committee donated $4000 from the pond hockey tournament to the Minnedosa Community Childcare Cooperative.
4th Annual Skate the Lake - 2010
Skate the Lake has joined forces with Minnedosa Minor Hockey to present the 4th annual and biggest yet pond hockey tournament on Lake Minnedosa on Feb. 13 + 14, 2010. With a larger group of volunteers working together to promote and run the event, Skate the Lake was able to donate $8,000 to the Minnedosa Regional Events Centre project.
5th Annual Skate the Lake - 2011
Skate the Lake and Minnedosa Minor Hockey once again teamed up to present Skate the Lake on Feb. 19 +20, 2011 on Minnedosa Lake. To make this fundraiser a success the Minor Hockey Board directed that no teams will play league or tournament games that weekend and all teams will be involved in Skate the Lake. Profits from the weekend were $6,800 and were donated to the Minnedosa Regional Events Centre.
